Ever since my period as Parliamentary Under-Secretary at State at the Ministry of Justice, I have taken a keen interest in sentencing policy and criminal justice. I believe that, fundamental to our system, there must be a greater emphasis on the rehabilitation of offenders to reduce re-offending and the repeated cycle of condemning vulnerable petty offenders to harden into serial criminals in our overcrowded prisons.
In view of the serious hardships being imposed on the local rail travelling public as a result of the bodged implementation of GTRs new timetable, many constituents have, understandably, contacted me to ask what I have been doing about it. This blog is intended to provide information about meetings I have had this week with the Secretary of State (SoS) for Transport and senior personnel from Network Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) on this issue.
The economic prosperity of my constituency is largely dependent on its transport links, especially its rail service. About as many people commute out of Reigate and Redhill by train, mainly to London destinations, as commute in to work in local businesses. Many choose to live in the area because it is an ideal commuter location. This affects both the value of local property and the health of the local economy.
Crispin Blunt has today called on the Department for Transport to urgently provide resources and emergency support to Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) and Network Rail in order to address the serious operational problems that have resulted in the introduction of GTRs new timetable, affecting hundreds of thousands of commuters and rail users.
