GTR have announced that the new station concourse at Gatwick Airport railway station is now open for customers.
Benefitting from the widening of Platform 5/6, eight new escalators, five new lifts, a complete refit of the existing concourse and the construction of a second, the upgrade has doubled space for customers and transformed access to the airport.
A key part of the upgrade is to help clear platforms faster, reducing what was previously the largest source of sub 60 second delays across the entire Brighton Main Line.
Close working between GTR’s planners and Network Rail’s engineers also enabled the delivery of a track upgrade as part of the works on platform 5, 6 and 7. This change has already shown its benefits, with a twenty-percentage point improvement in trains running to within 60 seconds of timetable and a seventy-five percent reduction in delay minutes attributable to the running of the network, since introduction in January of this year.
GTR would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while the transformation has been taking place.
