M25 junction 7 (M23 junction 8) Merstham interchange - Weekend Closures

Wednesday, 13 April, 2022

I have received the following information about forthcoming closures of the bridge on the M23/M25 Interchange at Merstham from Nartional Highways:

"We will soon be replacing several bridge expansion joints at the M25/M23 Merstham interchange, and some weekend road closures will be needed.

The Merstham interchange is a vital part of the south east strategic road network, connecting more than 100,000 journeys between the M25, M23 and A23 every day. The work is needed to keep the interchange safe for road users and to reduce the risk of having to carry out emergency repairs. By doing the work now, we will avoid future road closures, which would otherwise be needed to more frequently to maintain the joints.

Built in the 1970s, the Merstham interchange has five separate viaducts over three levels that cross the M25. We will need four separate weekend closures to safely deliver work on each of the linking roads between April and July 2022.

We’ve planned this work, and the necessary closures, for the following dates:

Date & times - 8:00pm Friday 22 April to 5:00am Monday 25 April

Road closure - M23 junction 8 southbound carriageway, including the M23 southbound to M25 clockwise link road

Diversion route - M25 junction 6 and return

Date & times - 8:00pm on Friday 13 May to 5:00am Monday 16 May

Road closure - M25 junction 7 clockwise link roads to the M23 northbound and southbound

Diversion route - M25 junction 8 and return

Date & times - 8:00pm on Friday 10 June to 5:00am Monday 13 June

Road closure - M23 junction 8 northbound carriageway, including the M23 northbound to M25 anti-clockwise link road

Diversion route - M25 junction 8 and return

Date & times - 8:00pm on Friday 1 July to 5:00am Monday 4 July

Road closure - M25 junction 7 anti-clockwise link roads to the M23 northbound and southbound

Diversion route - M25 junction 6 and return

Road users will be advised to use the diversion routes which are shown above. We do as much work as we can overnight where possible, but these four longer closures are needed because the joints run across the full width of the road, and the work to replace the joints and reinstate the surfacing has to be done in a continuous operation.

During each closure, we will remove the existing road surface, pour new concrete and reinforcement, before we install the new joints, and then reinstate the road surface and allow time for the new materials to cure.

You will be pleased to know that we are making the best use of the weekend closures by carrying out other work where it is safe to do so. This will include resurfacing, installing new monitoring equipment and carrying out surveys which will help us to plan and design further works which are required at a future date.

Retraction of statement on Imran Ahmad Khan

On reflection I have decided to retract my statement defending Imran Ahmad Khan. I am sorry that my defence of him has been a cause of significant upset and concern not least to victims of sexual offences. It was not my intention to do this.
