Some of my constituents have expressed concern that there are (a very limited number of) rough sleepers in the constituency. This is especially distressing to see at this time of year and when the weather is so cold.
I would just like to reassure all my constituents that the housing and homelessness team at Reigate and Banstead Borough Council are aware of the few rough sleepers in the Borough. As usual, they have done a fantastic job in offering support and accommodation options to all individuals who are sleeping rough in the area. However, regrettably, a very few rough sleepers refuse all offers of help, including offers of accommodation and prefer to stay where they are. They are not abandoned by the Council, but are regularly monitored and are continually offered support, including new ways of encouraging them indoors, in the hope they will eventually accept help.
Please be assured that everything possible is being done to deliver positive outcomes for these individuals. Of note, is that these people need to want to help themselves. If you notice a new rough sleeper in the Borough please report details of the sighting via www.streetlink.org.uk and this will automatically alert the Borough’s rough sleeper outreach service.
