It is very unfortunate that the Reigate Post office, situated in Martins, has been forced to close its doors earlier than anticipated due to lease issues with the landlord.
I was initially notified that Martins, run by national retailer McColl, would be closing its doors in mid-September 2020 and the Reigate Post Office facility withdrawn at a similar date due to the operator of the Post Office resigning. However, the fact the Post Office closed prematurely on 3rd March has, understandably, caused significant concern amongst my constituents.
I am fully aware of the importance of retaining a full Post Office facility in Reigate and it is reassuring that the Post Office is fully committed to operating such a facility in the Town. It is currently exploring all viable options with existing retailers and Reigate and Banstead Council, in order to work towards a positive resolution for everyone.
My team and I have been working hard to ensure that alternative arrangements are made as soon as possible and we have been in constant communication with The External Affairs Manager at the Post Office. The local Conservative Group is also campaigning hard. It has raised a petition of local residents, pressing for a continued Post Office service.
I would reiterate that the Post Office is fully committed to maintaining a full Post Office facility in Reigate, but the process is complex and likely to take six months or more as there are premises, franchise, and contractual issues to consider.
In the interim, a sub-Post Office facility is being considered and The Post Office is currently reviewing local premises for a ‘pop-up’ interim solution with ‘temporary’ post-master.
Please be assured that everything possible is being done to ensure that Reigate retains a full Post Office facility.
On a happier note, I am also delighted to have been notified that, following a temporary closure, a new Post Office branch has recently opened on Nutfield Road in south Merstham.
I will ensure that my website is updated once the Post Office makes a formal announcement about its plans for Reigate.
